Mopani Copper Mine Workers to Receive 13% Salary Increase in 2024 Agreement

Unionised employees of Mopani Copper Mine will see a 13% salary boost as part of the 2024 agreement between the union and the mine. The agreement, celebrated during a signing ceremony in Kitwe, entails a salary increment alongside a bonus scheme.

Under the new agreement, the most junior unionised workers will enjoy a K800 raise, while senior employees will receive K1400. Additionally, Mopani Copper Mines plans to hire 441 new miners, a move praised by Employee Relations Manager Justine Chiwama.

Chiwama commended the swift negotiations, attributing the success to the cooperation of the new equity partner, International Resources Holdings (IRH).

Joseph Chewe, president of the Mineworkers Union of Zambia, expressed gratitude to the government and IRH for their collaboration, emphasizing IRH’s commitment as a responsible partner.

Saul Simujika, President of the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers, highlighted the importance of the salary increment in facilitating IRH’s involvement in Mopani.

He urged miners to strive to exceed management’s expectations, heralding a promising future for the mine.
